We're having a problem with the connection from the new servers to the backends. Users may see 502 password errors or 403 server unavailable messages. We expect to have this fixed soon.

This issue has been resolved!

We are about to change the news, alt, unlimited server software to match that of the free server. This will cause article numbers to change. Please keep this in mind. Some clients handle this well and others do not. If you notice "no new articles" after the change in every group your client is confused about the change. Create a new server profile under a new name and it will work again.

Also note that the new servers have 90+ days of binary retention. It may take some time to download all headers after the change.

The nntp.teranews.com server is physically located in a different data center. Downloads from it may be faster for some people. Our suggestion is to download from nntp and use news/free/alt as a secondary server if your client will allow it. Keep in mind that the free/alt/news.teranews.com servers carry a few more groups than nntp.teranews.com as they are automatically added due to newgroup control messages. The nntp.teranews.com server does not auto add groups.

For the past month we have been allowing unlimited access to the free server in order to better test the new server. The new server has been running perfect for weeks now and it's time to turn the limits back on. If you liked the extra downloads please consider purchasing a pay account from us.

Also please make sure you keep your email address current. We do not sell your email or in any way abuse our users email accounts. We need a valid email in order to email your lost password when requested as well as issue warning emails when your account become inactive or over it's download limit.

We are making some config changes to the beta test server. Expect the free server to refuse connections for a few mintutes today.

The free server is working. We may still need to restart the server software a few more times over the next few days. If you still have problems follow the directions below.

We are looking into some weird behavior on the free server, mainly timeouts. We will post an update here when it's fixed. Please keep in mind that the problems are only on our free beta test server. Our pay servers are not effected.

The free servers article numbers have changed. Most news clients are smart enough to notice this automatically, but some will not. If you notice that no new headers are being download you should first try to force the header download by using your clients 'download all headers' instead of the normal 'update/check for new headers'. Download the entire group list again can also help. If that fails remove your news server profile completely and start over, preferably using a different name for the profile.
